Indian polity. Some facts one must know about India.

  • India comprises 28 states and 7 union territories.

  • A person is the citizon of India if:
  1. He was born in India, or
  2. Either of his parents was born in India, or
  3. Has stayed in India for not less than 5 years.
  • Fundamental rights provided to the citizen of India as listed in article 12 to 35 contained in part III of the constitution:
  1. Right to equality
  2. Right to freedom of speech and expression
  3. Right against exploitation
  4. Right to freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion
  5. Right of any section of citizens to conserve their culture
  6. Right to constitutional remedies for enforcements of fundamental rights
  • President of India
  1. Elected by different Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and state legislative assembly members whose votes have suitable weightages.
  2. He must be a citizen of India, must not be of age less than 35 years, must be qualified to be selected as a member of Lok Sabha.
  3. His term of office is 5 years and is eligible for re-election.
  4. His removal from the office is to be in accordance with the provision specified in article 61 of the constitution.
  5. He may, with a letter addressed to the Vice President, resign from his office.

  • Vice President of India
  1. Elected by different Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha members whose votes have suitable weightages.
  2. He must be a citizen of India, must not be of age less than 35 years, must be qualified to be selected as a member of Rajya Sabha.
  3. His term of office is 5 years and is eligible for re-election.
  4. His removal from the office is to be in accordance with the provision specified in Article 67-b of the constitution.
  5. He is the chairman of Rajya Sabha.

  • Rajya Sabha
  1. Can have a maximum of 238 members representing different states and union territories. In addition to this President can select 12 members.
  2. Members are elected indirectly by state legislative assembly members in accordance with the system of proportional representation, and by the elected members of union territories.
  3. Rajya Sabha can not be dissoluted. One third of its members retire after every 2 years.
  4. At present Rajya Sabha has 245 members, 233 representing different states and union territories and 12 chosen by the President.
  • Lok Sabha
  1. Maximum strength envisioned by constitution is 552. This includes 530 members chosen from states, 20 members chosen from union territories and 2 members chosen by President from Anglo-Indian community if he feels that they are not represented well in the assembly.
  2. Lok Sabha has at present 545 members, 530 from states, 13 from union territories and 2 chosen by President from Anglo-Indian community.
  3. So far, 14 Lok Sabhas have been appointed.
  4. A Lok Sabha member should have a minimum age of 25 years.
  5. The term of Lok Sabha is 5 years from the date of appointment of its first meeting.

  • Cabinet Secretariat
  1. Under the direct incharge of the Prime minister.
  2. Responsible for facilitating smooth transaction of business in ministeries.
  3. Assists in decision making by co-ordinating between different ministeries.
  4. Ensures that President/Vice President are kept informed regularly of the major activities by all ministeries/departments by a monthly report.
